Introduction:
Conceptual art is a type of visual art in which the concept or idea contained in the work takes precedence over conventional aesthetics and the materials used to create it. In conceptual art, the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work.
The Conceptual Art art movement flourished in Europe and America in the 1960s. The term conceptual art refers to various forms of art in which the artist’s ideas and thoughts are more important than the means of his expression and the materials he uses to create his work of art.
This term was first used by Sol LeWitt, one of the prominent American artists of that period, for some of his own works and those of other artists. He wrote in an article that not all artistic ideas and creative thoughts need to be expressed in the form of an object such as paintings, sculptures, and other forms of art; Rather, the artist can use any medium to convey his initial idea and opinion to the audience.
In conceptual art, what is important is the artist’s thought, not the art object. In fact, it could be said that: conceptual art is the reporting of an idea to the audience. In this style, artists wanted to free art from the constraints of commercial and speculative valuations that were applied to works of art and say that what is important is the artist’s thought and thought.
Artists in this style believe that paintings, sculptures, and art objects are nothing more than a way to express the artist’s thoughts and feelings, so this expression can be done with any other medium. Therefore, a document, photograph, map, diagram, manuscript, or film is a work of art if it can express what the artist intended.
The most important goal of conceptual art is to free art from the constraints of being tied to a specific object such as a painting or a sculpture, etc., as well as a specific place such as a museum, gallery, or exhibition. In the opinion of conceptual artists, an idea can be expressed in different ways, and any object can potentially be used to create a work of art, such as a chair or a television or a glass of water and a few ice cubes, etc.
Conceptual art is actually an evolutionary process, a process that begins with the artist's idea and continues in the mind of the audience.
Most conceptual artists use different types of art to express their ideas. They try to convey the concept they intend to convey to the viewer by putting different objects together, along with a theatrical performance and showing a film or several photo slides. Sometimes the audience, by walking through a conceptual art exhibition and passing through its different parts, considers themselves somehow involved in the arrangement of the space; such that they can ignore one part or focus more on another part of the exhibition. Sometimes in conceptual art, the audience itself becomes an element of the space that the artist intended to create in order to convey the concept he wants to convey. In fact, in conceptual art, concept and thought take precedence over aesthetics and technique. Form, shape, structure and media have no value in conceptual art.
In Iran, conceptual art is also popular among artists, and one of the most important events held in this style in Iran is the conceptual art exhibition that was held in 2001 at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art and was well received by artists and art lovers.
